New Social Media AI Experiences Announced by Meta

At the 2023 Meta Connect event, the company introduced users to new AI experiences and features that encourage creativity, connection, productivity, and self-expression. These features include AI stickers that users can create from text and images along with several other ways to integrate social media in AI.

They also announced social media AI Image Editing so users can quickly and seamlessly give photos a new look and feel by typing a descriptor like “pop art” or “collage from magazines, torn edges.”

But the big announcement that left the social media world buzzing was Meta’s new artificial intelligence-powered assistant.

Meta’s New AI-Powered Assistant

But the new AI tool that has all of the social media world buzzing is the new Meta AI Assistant. Through the new assistant, you can interact just like you would with a person.

The service is currently available on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and launching soon on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, and Quest 3.

The tool leverages technology from Meta’s latest large language model (LLM) research. It has access to real-time information through a partnership with Bing and includes a tool for image generation.

How AI Fits Into Your Life

Imagine this example of how you could use Meta AI.

You and your friends are in a group chat discussing what landmarks to visit in NYC. Meta AI serves options directly in the discussion. It also has ideas to help the group decide which restaurants to go to.

After the visit, if you want a way to commemorate your trip. Type the prompt "@MetaAI/Imagine" followed by descriptive text like "create a button badge with the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty." The tool generates a digital merit badge in the group chat.

A Diverse Cast of AI Characters

Perhaps the most controversial part of this AI announcement is the launch of Meta's 28 AI personas. This cast of AI characters is so diverse it rivals the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Think of these AIs as a new group of personalities, each with unique characteristics and backstories. The interesting part? These characters will look familiar. Meta partnered with cultural icons and influencers to create new personas with Instagram and Facebook profiles.

A few of the highlights include:

  • Dwayne Wade as an Ironman triathlete named Victor. He's here to help motivate you to be your best self.

  • Kendall Jenner as your new BFF named Billie. She takes no BS and is as ride-or-die as they come.

  • Paris Hilton as Amber. She's a take-no-prisoners detective who'll take you on a thrilling mystery.

  • Tom Brady as Bru. He's all about sports, quick with a punchline, and won't mince words.

  • Snoop Dogg as The Dungeon Master. He's always ready to take you on a text-based adventure.

Meta is currently rolling out their personas in the US. They also have plans for future characters played by Bear Grylls, Chloe Kim, and more.
